The Final Days of Winter — And What They Teach Us About Markets

April 07, 2026

The first quarter of this year has reminded us of something we all know well—progress is rarely a straight line. Markets have faced their share of challenges: periods of volatility, shifting expectations around interest rates, and uncertainty tied to global developments. While none of this is unusual in the broader context of long-term investing, it can feel uncomfortable in the moment, especially after periods of strong performance.

In many ways, this quarter has resembled the final days of winter. Late winter is often the most unpredictable stretch of the season. Just when you begin to sense warmer days ahead, the cold returns. Snow falls again. The ground feels frozen, and spring can seem delayed.

But beneath the surface, something important is happening. The days are getting longer. The soil is preparing and the foundation for growth is quietly being set—even if it’s not yet visible.

Markets behave in much the same way. Short-term setbacks and volatility are not signs of failure—they are part of the natural cycle. Periods like this often serve to reset expectations, strengthen fundamentals, and create opportunities for future growth. Historically, some of the most meaningful advances have followed periods that felt uncertain at the time.

Our role is not to react to every cold front—but to remain focused on the season ahead. We remain steadfast in our process:

·    Maintain disciplined, diversified portfolios

·    Evaluate opportunities and make appropriate changes as we see fit

·    Focus on your long-term goals, not short-term noise

It’s also worth remembering, economic and market conditions are rarely as good as they seem at the top, or as bad as they feel in moments like these. After all, spring does not arrive at once—but it does arrive. And when it does, the groundwork laid during these colder stretches often becomes clear.
