My View from the Porch: Everything Is Fine… Sort Of

My View from the Porch: Everything Is Fine… Sort Of

July 27, 2026

This year has been special for my family.

After years of dreaming and planning, we purchased a 43-acre farm. While there is plenty of work ahead—fences to mend, fields to care for, and projects that always seem to multiply—I’ve already discovered my favorite place on the property: the porch.

There’s something about sitting on that porch at sunrise, coffee in hand, watching the morning light slowly spread across the pastures. In the evening, it’s just as peaceful as the sun settles behind the trees and the day’s noise begins to fade. Out there, life has a way of slowing down. The headlines don’t seem quite as urgent. The problems don’t disappear, but they often find their proper place. Most importantly, the porch gives me perspective.

As I sat there one evening not long ago, I couldn’t help but think that our personal or business financial plans are a lot like that view. When you’re standing in the middle of the field, every hill feels steeper, every rut seems deeper, and every obstacle demands your full attention. But from the porch, you see the whole landscape. You remember where you’ve been, you appreciate where you are, and you can better imagine where you’re headed. That’s exactly what good financial planning is supposed to do.

If you’ve watched the financial news this year, you’ve probably been told we’re either headed toward an economic boom, a recession, a geopolitical crisis that will cause World War III, an AI revolution, stubborn inflation, lower inflation, or perhaps all the above before lunch.

Meanwhile, most of us are simply trying to enjoy dinner without having to take anxiety medicine! The truth is that the economy has shown remarkable resilience. Businesses continue to innovate. Consumers continue to spend. Companies continue to adapt. At the same time, challenges remain. Interest rates are higher than many of us became accustomed to. Inflation has eased but hasn’t completely disappeared. And around the world, events continue to remind us that uncertainty is simply part of life.

So yes…Everything is fine…Sort of. The funny thing is that’s almost always been true.

During my career, I’ve had the privilege of helping clients navigate the dot-com bubble, the Great Financial Crisis, COVID, banking scares, inflation spikes, elections, wars, and more “once-in-a-lifetime” events than I care to count. Every one of them felt overwhelming at that moment. Yet every one of them eventually became another chapter in a much longer story.

History has a remarkable way of rewarding patience. The headlines, however, rarely reward perspective. On the farm, summer thunderstorms can roll in quickly. Dark clouds gather, rain pounds the roof, and for a while it feels like everything has changed. Then, almost as suddenly, the clouds drift away, the birds begin singing again, and the fields seem even greener than before. Markets behave much the same way. Storms come. Storms go. The porch stays.

That is why we spend so much time focusing on planning instead of predicting. We cannot control interest rates, elections, tariffs, or what the economy or markets will do next Tuesday. We can control diversification, thoughtful planning, tax efficiency, disciplined decisions, and perhaps most importantly, keeping our emotions from making expensive mistakes.

Successful investing rarely has been about being the smartest person in the room. More often, it is about being the calmest.

As we move through the remainder of the year, I remain optimistic—not because I expect a perfectly smooth road ahead, but because history consistently reminds us that progress has a habit of overcoming panic.

America has weathered recessions, inflation, wars, political division, technological disruption, and countless predictions of doom. Through it all, entrepreneurs continued building, businesses continued growing, families continued saving, and patient investors who remained disciplined were generally rewarded.

Our philosophy has not changed. We build financial plans designed to withstand uncertainty rather than depend upon certainty. Because certainty is a promise the markets have never made.

The porch reminds me to slow down. To appreciate the view. To remember that tomorrow’s headlines eventually become yesterday’s news. And perhaps most importantly, remember that while building wealth matters, building a meaningful life matters even more.

It’s using your resources to create moments with your family, invest in your community, support the causes you believe in, and leave a legacy measured by more than account balances.

That is what Live Brilliantly has always meant to me.

So, from my porch to yours…

Everything is fine...Sort of. And that’s okay.

I hope you find your own “porch” this season—a place that helps you step back, enjoy the view, and remember what truly matters.

Until next time, Live Brilliantly!
